The Fitting: Sizing a Linear Chandelier for the Dining Table

02 Sep 2026

A linear chandelier should run one half to two thirds of the table's length and hang 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop, leaving 6 inches of table beyond each end, numbers that put an even line of light over every seat without a single visible bulb.

Our earlier piece on why linear chandeliers elevate a dining room made the style case. This is the fitting appointment: lengths, heights and the two stone silhouettes that carry the look.

The fitting table

Table length Fixture length Height above top
60 in, seats 6 30 to 40 in 30 to 34 in
72 in, seats 6-8 36 to 48 in 30 to 36 in
96 in, seats 8-10 48 to 64 in 32 to 36 in
Kitchen island same ratio 34 to 38 in for sight lines

Two silhouettes, two rooms

The Art Linear chandelier hangs its stone as one sculpted line, the formal answer for settled dining rooms with a rug and a sideboard. The Column Linear breaks the run into vertical stone columns, more rhythm, less mass, which suits open-plan tables that share their airspace with a kitchen.

Install-day checklist

  1. Center on the table, not the room; tables drift from architectural centers in most homes.
  2. Level to within half an inch across the run; a laser level makes the difference visible.
  3. One dimmer for the whole run, dinner starts at 100 percent and ends at 40.
  4. Confirm box rating against the fixture's listed weight before the ladder comes out.

Linear chandelier sizing guide: your questions

How long should a linear chandelier be for my table?

One half to two thirds of the table's length: a 72 inch table carries a 36 to 48 inch fixture, an 84 to 96 inch table carries 48 to 64 inches, always leaving at least 6 inches of table beyond each end of the fixture.

How high do you hang a linear chandelier?

30 to 36 inches from tabletop to the fixture's underside on an 8 ft ceiling, adding roughly 3 inches per extra foot of ceiling. Stone diffusers reward the lower half of the range.

Can a linear chandelier go over a kitchen island?

Yes, with the same length rule and 2 to 4 inches more height for sight lines across the counter. Center it on the island, not the room.

Do linear fixtures need two junction boxes?

Most hang from one central canopy with two or four cable drops; longer architectural pieces may use two boxes. Check the listed mounting before scheduling the electrician.

What makes alabaster linear fixtures special?

The stone diffuses along its entire run, so the whole table is lit evenly with no bulb glare at any seat, and the veining makes each fixture one of one.
